Model UN in Dayton, Feb. 12, 13, 14

Course Description

This course provides the chance for students to participate in the Model UN, February 12-14 in Dayton, Ohio. Before the UN simulation students will research the country that they will represent in the General Assembly, the Security Council, ECOSOC, WIPO or AU and the issues to be discussed by those bodies this year.  They will also learn UN history, structure and protocol in preparation for the Model UN.  The course will be completed after the Dayton trip with a final paper required.

Thursday, January 8: Introduction, Division of parts, Description of Model UN

Thursday, January 15: History of the UN and discussion of research to date
            [Practice simulation at Sinclair, optional, is Saturday, January 17]

Thursday, January 22: Issues surrounding the UN and position papers

Thursday, January 29: Practice protocol with issues statements

Thursday, February 5:  Final Preparations for DAYMUNC

Wednesday, February 11-Saturday February 14: Model UN in Dayton
            Leave 4:00 Wednesday afternoon, Return Saturday evening by 8:00 p.m.

Thursday, February 19: Discussion of what happened in Dayton

Thursday, February 26: Final Papers due in my office by 4:00

Requirements
  1. Attend each class session prior to the Model UN trip (no excuses!)
  2. Keep a running log of hours spent in research before the trip, turn in each class session, required 4 hours/week, log should include short description of what you read or what you looked up and where.  You will need to investigate the particular issues before the UN as well as the country you will be representing. 
  3. Learn rules of UN procedure.
  4. Write a position paper and post to DAYMUNC site by January 22
  5. Participate fully in the Dayton Model UN.
  6. Final report for Model UN, includes a description of your preparation and participation in the Model UN (probably 10 pages)
  7. There is an extra cost of 50$/student for the trip plus covering your own food costs in Dayton.  We will be staying three nights in a motel in Dayton.  We will try to get a grant to cover the other expenses.  You can take food from the Marriott or from your home in a cooler if you want.  At the Model UN they put out bagels, fruit, juice, sodas, coffee, chips, cookies so you can keep fed at a minimal level there.
