Meet
the author
Marvin Bartel,
Emeritus
Professor of Art, was a member
of the art faculty at Goshen College from 1970 to 2002. Prior to coming
to Goshen
he originated the ceramics curriculum in the art department and served
on the art faculty at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman
University).
Earlier he taught art at Bethel College (Kansas), and Topeka High
School
(Kansas). Bartel has master's and doctor's degrees in art education
from
the University of Kansas. He majored in art at Bethel
College (Kansas),
also studying art at Washburn University and Wichita State
University.
Bartel is a
practicing exhibiting
artist, maintaining his own ceramics studio in Goshen, Indiana.
Bartel’s
work has been shown in many national, international and regional
exhibitions
including the 24th and 25th Ceramic Nationals, Everson Museum of Art,
Syracuse,
New York; American Jewelry Today, Scranton, Pennsylvania; Craftsmen of
the Central States, Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York; 9th Annual
Own Your Own Exhibition, Denver Art Museum; 18th Annual
Decorative
Arts and Ceramics Exhibition, Wichita, Kansas; Cerritos Ceramic Annual,
Cerritos, California, National Cone Box Show, Kansas University,
Lawrence,
Kansas; National Cone Box Show, Purdue University, West Lafayette,
Indiana;
and Ceramics International, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Bartel's work is
a regularly selected for the Annual Elkhart Juried Regional
Exhibitions,
Midwest Museum of American Art, Elkhart, Indiana. He won best in
ceramics
awards in 1992 and 1995.
In 2004, Bartel
has work in, "A Sense of Identity: Contemporary Ceramic Art".
This exhibition runs from January 12 to February 14 at Indiana U. -
Purdue U. in Ft. Wayne and at the U. of Indianapolis, March 6 to April
16, in conjunction with the National Council on Education in the
Ceramics Arts 38th Annual Conference.
Bartel taught
university and college
ceramics from 1965 until 2001. From 1970 to 2002, he also taught
art education courses. Other courses he has taught include
photography, drafting and design, and house design.
Currently,
Dr. Bartel writes on art
education and other topics, produces web pages, designs buildings,
produces tile work, sinks, pottery, sculpture, design-builds
patented energy efficient kilns, has a small orchard
and garden. He and Delores are participants at the Eighth Street
Mennonite
Church congregation, Goshen, Indiana. They have 3 children and 5
grandchildren.
