Dr. Matthew Hill is Professor of Piano and co-chair of the music department at Goshen College with a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the tutelage of Howard Karp and has also studied with the renowned Beethoven interpreter Claude Frank. He received his Master of Music in piano performance from the University of Kansas as a student of Dr. Richard Angeletti, and graduated summa cum laude from Southwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor in Music where he studied with Dr. Garik Pedersen. Matthew presented a series of master classes and a recital performance at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu China, as well as guest lectures at the Southwest University of Science and Technology in Mianyang; contributed a chapter to Silence, Music, Silent Music (Ashgate 2007) and has written for Clavier; Professor Hill was an invited presenter at “Couleurs dans le vent: Celebrating the Music of Olivier Messiaen” an international conference held at the University of Kansas . Dr. Hill presented a poster session at the MTNA Conference held in Kansas City and has also presented at the Great Lakes Regional Conference for the College Music Society. Matthew is an active recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto performer; Dr. Hill presents master classes, and lectures at the Goshen College Piano Workshop, as well as for music teacher organizations.
Matthew Hill has performed Samuel Barber’s Piano Concerto with the UW-Madison Symphony and has also performed with the Central Wisconsin Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, as well as a performance of Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto with the Goshen College Orchestra. He has performed on Wisconsin Public Radio’s Live from the Elvehjem and has also performed at the White House in Washington D.C. as accompanist for the Wausau Conservatory Choraliers Children’s Choir.
Dr. Hill’s students have won several regional competitions such as the IMTA Senior Auditions and several alternates in the IMTA Collegiate Artist Auditions. His students have performed with the Goshen College Orchestra, and have also been winners in the South Bend Young Artist Competition and the La Porte Young Artist Competition, performing concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Saint-Saens, Ravel, Gershwin, and Prokofiev. Several of his students have also gone onto graduate study at such schools as Ball State University, Bowling Green University, Westminster Choir College, and the Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
