Including... Elena and Katie, Peter in a costume (made by Chris) from the Vancouver Opera, and a rowdy group of Santas spotted in downtown Vancouver.

Elena turns 4

Elena turned four on April 29. Her cousin Katie, and neighbor Greta came over for a birthday tea.

In the next-to-last photo, Elena is inciting her buddies to take the route through the closet from one room to another.

The final one is all the offspring with Oma's "worm cake".

Cooking with Peter

This is, ermmm, Peter's own recipe.

Iowa

On our way out to Wyoming it was great to see all the Busses (Buss'? Buses? Busss?) and Paulsons!

South Dakota

We wandered west through the Badlands to Carl and Karissa's place in Porcupine, SD (on the Pine Ridge reservation), where Benjamin turned seven and Carl rose early to make him a crepe cake!

Carlissa, would that sign earlier have read "*Battle* of Wounded Knee"?

Grand Tetons 2004 -1 Camping at Colter Bay

Al and Mary Ellen had set up a "base camp" in the Grand Teton National Park at the Colter Bay campground on Jackson Lake with a great view across the water of Mount Moran. We overlapped part of a day with Rose, Jazzmin, and Mark before they returned.

Among other things, we saw a tipi building demonstration.

The summer has been very dry, and the last photo shows Benjamin in front of the completely dry marina at Colter Bay.

GT-2 Jenny Lake -- Inspiration Point

This was a fun hike for a young family: A boat across Jenny Lake, and then 1 mile and about 400 feet up (with the crowds) to Inspiration point. Elena (4) made it on her own!

GT-3 Tram up to __ Mountain

A tram (ski lift) goes up to Mount ___ from Teton Village. An easy way to get up and beautiful views. Very windy at the top. Not much in the way of short day hikes from here...The most attractive hike from here would have been 12 miles and 4,000 feet down. This would be an excellent way to start a multi-day backpacking trip -- it's at the south end of the trails that go on the east side of the Tetons.

GT-4 Bradley and Taggart lakes

This was a little longer--about 5 miles round trip and about 700 feet of elevation gain. Carried Elena off and on.

GT-5 Inspiration Pt again and Cascade Canyon

With Elaine and Bobby, we went up to Inspiration point once more. Lucas (3) made it up by himself just taking his time.

Elaine, Paul and the older boys went further up Cascade Canyon.

GT-6 Amphitheater and Surprise Lakes

Our longest hike up to some beautiful lakes and views was 9.6 miles roundtrip, with 2900 feet of elevation. Benjamin (7), Gabe and Peter came with Kathy and Paul past Surprise Lake (surprising because it was one of the few lakes Gabe didn't get wet in!) to Amphitheater Lake, powered by long stories.

The older boys clambered more than halfway back to Surprise Lake via the cascading stream that connects the two. The last picture is a view back up towards Disappointment Peak and Amphitheater Lake. They also made it up to a small snowfield--Benjamin is using the last of the gathered snow against Kathy.

Meanwhile Elaine and Bobby split off with Jackson (5) up the Garnett Canyon. This was thought to be a more modest climb, but they climbed well into the canyon to similar elevations before turning around.

First day of school

Benjamin starts second grade. Peter starts fifth, and last year at Chandler.

Peter the paper boy

An older neighbor boy wants to run cross country, so asked Peter to substitute during the week on his paper route. Peter is the first of his agemates to do this, so all his neighborhood buddies want to join in.

Oops--Paul put the coffee on and then helped Peter walk his route for an hour...

Snow (or not)

Dec 31 was warm enough that we went out and worked in our garden (without coats). Now snow has returned.

Snow

The joys of snow including eating it--here with cream and sugar.

Here and there in January

Elena's outfit is courtesy of fabric scraps from Tante Stintje.

Music and dancing

Elena has been dancing while Benjamin practices violin. Now the game has advanced to where Benjamin the dance master is showing off his best ballet pupil.

Paul goes to Idaho

For a highly unusual birthday, I went to Idaho to visit Malcolm and Michelle who recently moved to Twin Falls (from Boise) and to do some skiing.

Sunday, we warmed up at Pomerelle--1000 ft vertical difference. Malcolm and I are newbies compared to Michelle.

Sun Valley and Boise

Monday Malcolm and I went to Sun Valley--beautiful sunshine and 3400 ft vertical difference.

Besides the fantastic scenery and marble bathrooms, I was fascinated with the idea of kleenex dispensers by all the lifts. (Not unique to Sun Valley--Pomerelle also had them.)

We were hosted royally by Russ and Janet in Boise on Monday night before I headed back.

Gotta bike

It was 15 degrees this morning. But when the sun came out, Elena decided she just had to bike to school. Her father was convinced that such a resolve, made from a position of central heating, would soon melt when exposed to the cold. But no, she cheerfully pedalled the whole way to the college!

CSA spring concert

Benjamin's Suzuki class had a spring concert at Sauder Hall, preceding the Menno Youth Choir festival.

Peter's spring concert

Peter's 5th grade orchestra. Peter played a brief solo and did quite well. The fourth grade choir did an, ahem, Egyptian treatment of the food pyramid.

  • Elena finally got her wish--a whole container of raw tofu *just for her*.
  • A local hummingbird
  • They're tearing down the 8th Street gate to Goshen College in order to widen the road this summer. It will be re-built a bit further back.
