Professor Jo-Ann A. Brant

I am a professor at Goshen College where I teach in the Bible, Religion and Philosophy Department. I teach a variety of courses, but my research focus is upon understanding the Gospel of John within the Greco-Roman world of theatre and spectacle. In the presentations that I give to the Church, I look at how popular films and literature, such as X-Men, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lord of the Rings, use Christian themes. My classes cover the most up-to-date scholarship, but several questions wind their way through my courses that make them distinct to Goshen College. What is a heroic act? How do acts of self sacrifice bring reconciliation? How can we expose the myth of redemptive violence for what it is? I invite you to read my CV (an academic resume) to get a snap shot of my scholarly work, take a look at some photographs that capture some of my interests and hobbies, or investigate some of the other links to programs with which I have been affiliated (a Sunday School Curriculum that I designed for my Church's Youth Group and the German Study and Service Term that I led with my husband in the Summer of 2007). The pictures on this page were taken on Moose Mountain (Elevation 2437 m/7995 ft; Alberta, Canada) in the Summer of 2006.
