The Ecumenical Camp

The CPT delegation joined the Ecumenical camp on the beach on the north side of the bombing range. This camp was set up and run by pastors and leaders of the protestant churches in Vieques and Puerto Rico.

The banner read :

CAMPAMENTO CRISTIANO

EN OBEDIENCIA EVANGELICA

or: CHRISTIAN CAMP IN PROTESTANT OBEDIENCE

Those who were camped in the bombing range were usually referred to as "desobedientes civiles" (civil disobedients) or just "desobedientes". The banner calls attention to a higher obedience. One english translation of Evangelica (i.e. Protestant) calls to mind another era of disobedience to a different authority. Amazingly, though the division between Catholic and Protestant is still rather strong in Latin America, it was absent in this struggle. The Viequenses are very proud of Catholic, Protestant and Pentecostal Christians having come together to build the ecumenical chapel and worship together in it. The CPT delegation included 4 Catholics, 4 Mennonites, and one member of the Church of the Brethren.

The members of the camp on the day before the arrests.
On Thursday morning May 4, helicopters were flying all around, navy ships were visible off-shore, and word had come that arrests were being made. In the tense moments while we waited, Cliff and Teresa made a "last breakfast" for the group.
