Always raise with the right hand at about the 4 or 5 o'clock position. Never hold your hand at the 2 or 3 o'clock position.

  • Near the bottom, both outside and inside pressure points must be directly opposite each other.
  • Use enough pressure to thin and raise the clay, but not enough to tear it off.
  • Tearing it off is normal while learning.  
  • Try again and again to find the right pressure to raise it, but not tear it off or twist it.
  • Use a slow, steady, continuous firm upward motion to pull clay up.
  • As you move up, gradually change all the pressure to outside only to keep the top as small as possible. 
  • This produces a vertical cone shaped cylinder that is smaller at the top.
