Elastic Metamaterials and cloaking

Metamaterials (and waves)

...artificial materials engineered to have properties that may not be found in nature - Metamaterials - Wikipedia

...any inhomogeneous material. - Milton, 2007

When waves interact with metamaterials new phenomena appear that do not exist in homogenous materials.

Example: Air with suspended droplets of water and light waves:

Elastic metamaterials

Vibration of the electromagnetic field = 'light'.
Typical wavelength: 100s of nm ($10^{-7}$ m).

Vibrations in matter = sound / acoustic / earthquake / elastic / water waves.
Typical wavelengths of mm to 100s of km ($10^{-2}$ m).

Seismic s-wave

Elastic Cloaks

Inhomogeneous: materials with different resistances to wave deformation.
