Syllabus
I. Course Description:
Due to the every-other-year offering of the course, and overall limited offering of Music Technology courses in general, the course will be in the form of a hands-on practicum. Students are expected to sit in and assist prior to, during and after the recordings of recitals and concerts. A schedule for this will be established at the beginning of the semester. The course will provide a general overview of analog and digital recording techniques. Through working with a variety of hardware and software based recording media e.g. DAT (digital audio tape), CDR (recordable compact disc), MD (mini disc), digital 8-track, ProTools, the student will gain an insight into the different situations, a recording engineer is faced with in his/her daily work.
II. Literature necessary:
No purchase necessary. We’ll find a substantial part of the necessary information on the web. In addition, a list of recommended text will be posted on Blackboard.
III. General Observations:
Technology has become an integral part of many facets of today's music making, listening, writing and recording. As much as there is a need to train young musicians in understanding and performing music, there is also one in educating them in the ways technology assists, and often shapes the process that leads to a final musical product. A general understanding of the available technologies will make the working musician, as well as the music teacher more efficient in their professions.
IV. Assignments:
Weekly: Readings as handed out by the instructor. Written assignments.
Ongoing: Assisting on live recordings of Music Center events. Midterm project: Making of a multi-track recording of a composition of the students choice. Final project: Making of a short CD (3 compositions minimum). Two pieces have to be multi-track recordings. The final project will also count toward the senior project, where it may undergo some revision, if necessary.
V. Exams:
Midterm and Final exam
VI. Attendance:
Regular attendance is crucial for the success of this course. I will grant two absences per semester. Every additional absence will result in a lowering of the grade by one letter grade.
